LAC Lunar Astronautical Charts - CD-ROM - £1.99

CD-ROM featuring all 44 high-resolution images in the LAC Moon atlas.

LAC charts of the Moon's near-side were prepared by the US Air Force in the 1960s. The maps are highly detailed. The original charts were printed to a scale of 1:1.000,000 (22 x 29 inches).

These high quality reprints of all 44 LAC Moon charts are an absolute MUST HAVE for anyone interested in the Moon, space exploration, cartography, etc.

List of charts: LAC-11 J Herschel LAC-12 Plato LAC-13 Aristoteles LAC-23 Rumker LAC-24 Sinus Iridum LAC-25 Cassini LAC-26 Eudoxus LAC-27 Geminus LAC-38 Seleucus LAC-39 Aristarchus LAC-40 Timocharis LAC-41 Mts Apenninus LAC-42 Mare Serenitatis LAC-43 Macrobius LAC-44 Cleomedes LAC-56 Hevelius LAC-57 Kepler LAC-58 Copernicus LAC-59 Mare Vaporum LAC-60 Julius Caesar LAC-61 Taruntius LAC-62 Mare Undarum LAC-74 Grimaldi LAC-75 Letronne LAC-76 Mts Riphaeus LAC-77 Ptolemaeus LAC-78 Theophilus LAC-79 Colombo LAC-80 Langrenus LAC-92 Byrgius LAC-93 Mare Humorum LAC-94 Pitatus LAC-95 Purbach LAC-96 Rupes Altai LAC-97 Fracastorius LAC-98 Petavius LAC-110 Schickard LAC 111 Wilhelm LAC-112 Tycho LAC-113 Maurolycus LAC-114 Rheita LAC-125 Schiller LAC-126 Clavius LAC-127 Hommel

LAC charts portray lunar topography by shadient relief with a western illumination, approximate contours (300 metre interval), spot elevations, height differences between level features and crater depths. Background coloration is also used to indicate variance in reflectance of lunar areas under full illumination. Contours are omitted from many sheets (generally those covering limb areas) and the reverse side of some sheets contains a printing of the shadient relief portrayal, unencumbered with other chart details.

The LAC Series was the principal source of available lunar cartographic information prior to the production of lunar maps from orbital photography. Its compilation included derivation of accurate local feature heights and depths through measurement of shadow images on source photography. However, use the earthbased vertical control and photography have not allowed definition of reliable regional elevation differences. By virtue of its scale, extent of coverage and topographic information contained, the LAC series continues to be of cartographic importance.

A truly superb lunar reference work!

Now you can own a copy of this masterpiece of lunar cartography on CD-ROM to browse at your leisure on your own PC. It will be especially useful to students of the Moon, lunar observers and collectors of space memorabilia.

The Consolidated Lunar Atlas - CD-ROM - £1.99

215 high resolution photographs of the Moon's near side

At the dawn of the Space Age, NASA undertook to find and assemble the very best images of the Moon it could find. The acme of telescopic lunar atlases came with the publication of the Consolidated Lunar Atlas (CLA) (Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, University of Arizona, 1967), a collection of high quality photographs including all the best images taken from Earth-based telescopes. The atlas shows the nearside of the Moon under a wide variety of illuminations, from sunrise to sunset. Amateur astronomers have known for years that the CLA is a superb resource, and knowledgeable lunar scientists and observers use the atlas to this day.

Few intact copies of the CLA have survived; it has become one of the rarest lunar publications, with used copies found in some rare book stores going for thousands of dollars. But now you can view all the images contained in the CLA on this superb CD-ROM! Save on the hassle of downloading images from the Internet, and consult this wonderful lunar resource at your leisure. An important reference work for lunar observers, space enthusiasts or lovers of the Moon.

Moon map by Edmund Neison (1876) - CD-ROM - £1.99

A classic observational lunar map

Detailed 22-section map of the Moon's near side. Edmund Neison (whose real surname was Nevill) was one of the most prominent British selenographers of the Victorian era. He was one of the founder members of the Selenographical Society, a group which developed into the nucleus of the Lunar Section of the newly-formed British Astronomical Association. Born in Beverley, Yorkshire, England, Neison was educated at Harrow and at New College, Oxford. His lifelong interest was the Moon and lunar observation. At the time that he began observing, selenography (the study and mapping of the Moon) was attaining great popularity, due largely to the mapping work of Julius Schmidt and the duo of Wilhelm Beer and Johann Madler. Neison set out to revise Beer and Madler's map, and in addition provide a comprehensive description of the entire Moon. This monumental work was achieved in 1876 with the publication of his book 'The Moon -- and the Condition and Configuration of its Surface' -- the first great lunar book to be written in English. Now a rare resource, the book and its maps was immensely popular, and established Neison as one of the world's leading authorities on the Moon. Neison helped found the Selenographical Society in the UK, and became its Secretary. It is no coincidence that the decline of this short-lived lunar group began with his resignation in 1883.

The original printed book and maps are exceedingly hard to find and rather expensive. But now I have scanned the charts at high resolution, and you can view all the maps contained in Neison's 1876 book on this superb CD-ROM! Consult this wonderful lunar resource at your leisure.

An important reference work for lunar observers, space enthusiasts or lovers of the Moon.

About these DVDs: These public domain NASA films have been converted to DVD format. These DVDs reflect the actual quality of the original NASA film footage, which is by no means perfect in places (eg, occasional screen wobble, some grainy film footage, etc). So, aside from minor compression artifacts, the quality of these DVDs approaches those films obtainable directly from NASA. Until NASA re-issues a remastered set (and this does not appear likely in the near future) we have to settle for the quality of these films - having said this, they give a real flavour of the Apollo era, and any space fan will find them thoroughly enjoyable to watch! The music and commentary is something else!

About the Apollo program: The Apollo Program began before the first American was launched into space. In July 1960, NASA announced that a program to fly Astronauts around the Moon would follow the planned Mercury program. With President Kennedy’s famous speech on 25 May 1961, the focus on the Apollo missions shifted to a lunar landing and came into sharper focus with the goal of achieving this before the decade’s end. Many people feel that the Apollo program stands as mankind’s greatest technological achievement. In all, six missions landed on the Moon’s surface, and three others orbited the Moon without landing, including the ill-fated Apollo 13. Twelve men in all walked on the Moon before Apollo was done. The last three missions featured the Lunar Rover, which permitted the astronauts to drive about and explore various terrains too rough for the LM to attempt to land upon.

A note on the quality of these films: The quality of these films closely matches that of the originals which are available from NASA on DVD for 35 dollars each (per movie). Until the NASA originals are digitally remastered, viewers will find that in places the movies may appear a litte fuzzy or washed out. Viewers should be aware that this is not a reflection of the quality of these DVDs, rather a reflection of the quality of the original movie archive footage.
